It’s been 600 years since the last time a Pope stepped down. I’m saddened by this news because I had a great deal of respect for this Pope not just as a spiritual leader, but as an academician. In a statement this morning Benedict said,
“However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the barque of St. Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary — strengths which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me.”
My respect for this man has just ballooned.
Benedict’s resignation will take effect the day after my birthday – February 28 – allowing for their to be enough time potentially for a new Pope by Easter.
