With my birthday right around the corner I’m going to step out on a limb and ask for something pretty specific from my faithful readers.

There is a project I’d love for you to support. It’s called “FROM THE SKY: a short film about living under drones.”

  • TIME IS SHORT! The film has 11 more days to reach their goal of raising $18,500. They currently have $8,825 pledged. The deadline is February 28 (my birthday is February 27). So time is of the essence.
  • A birthday card costs on average $3.79. This site has an average of 300 visitors a day. If every visitor donated the cost of a birthday card to this project, you would all raise a whopping $12,507.
  • As I understand it, if the goal is not met you will get your pledge back. So take comfort in the fact that your money does not disappear into oblivion if the project falls through. It’s low risk to you. Of course we want the project to take off, that way you can literally see the fruits of your pledge

I can’t pinpoint exactly what it is, but I feel pretty strong about this project. In essence it is a film about “a poverty-stricken father and son [who] struggle to survive in a region of the Middle East frequently targeted by unmanned aerial strikes.” (read the full description here.) This film puts faces on the all too easily dismissed dots on the ground targeted by unmanned drones dropping bombs, and explores the effects these type of things have on the lives of real people. Aside from that, I’m moved mostly by how the film is said to explore the bond of a noble father and his troubled teen. Anybody who has followed this blog for any length of time knows that father-son issues are dear to my heart. Finally, it is a thoughtful movie in that it explores the question: When we are harmed, will we respond by retaliating, or in life-giving ways?

Finally, in our Facebook saturated world it is too easy to “like” something without actually doing something. Did you know that the Bible speaks to this:

“Facebook ‘Likes‘, by itself, if not accompanied by action, is dead.” (James 2:17, contemporary translation)

So I would urge with to turn your ‘likes’ into actions. That would be awesome.

As a matter of full disclosure, my wife and I put up $25. I’m not boasting, so please don’t take it that way. I’m a little embarrassed to say how much. I only mention it so that you know I’m serious about this. All I’m asking is that you and your friends would scoot over there and donate the cost of a birthday card. That’s it. (Of course if you want to do more, that’s cool too!)

Here’s the site with videos and the place to donate: FROM THE SKY: a short film about living under drones.
